update on coalition activity

Heidelberg has erected a sign on the Scott Property, indicating their intention to move forward with this disruptive and destructive development.  We expect Heidelberg to file their formal application with the NRCB no later than June – we must act now to protect our community.

The Bearspaw Community Coalition Steering Committee continues to prepare for the process ahead.  Key actions to date include:

1. Securing legal representation by retaining Richard Secord, a partner at Ackroyd LLP.  He has appeared in over 125 energy, utility and environmental hearings, including with the NRCB.

2. Identifying independent experts to support detailed technical review of Heidelberg’s application and potential impacts.

3. Submitting an interim funding request to Heidelberg to supplement the fundraising efforts of our community (which they have declined to provide at this time).

4. Assessing potential changes to provincial legislation governing gravel pit approvals in Alberta.

Your Steering Committee has donated thousands of dollars and thousands of hours to this important fight, but we cannot do it alone. 

Please support our efforts as follows:

1. Sign the attached consent form to strengthen our coalition and email to noscottpit@gmail.com.  These are essential to demonstrate that you have authorized the Coalition to speak on your behalf at the NRCB hearing.

2. Donate by sending a secure e-transfer to noscottpit@gmail.com.  At this stage, fundraising is critical to secure the required legal and expert support, and to pay for activities not covered by potential intervenor funding.

3. Forward to the Coalition any correspondence you send to, or receive from Heidelberg, for our records: noscottpit@gmail.com. 

Our community has raised $47,000 to date – thank you to our generous donors, who are recognized here.  We are also proud to have received signed consent forms from just under 290 households, representing a majority of homeowners near the proposed gravel pit. So please be sure to email us your signed consent form to join your neighbours in this important fight!
